My sister Cathy told me an interesting story about a conversation that she had recently with my housekeeper. Just to set the stage a bit, Carolyn is a godsend in keeping my life and my family both tidy and on track and I have found she is a very wise and pragmatic woman who has raised two children on her own in some very trying circumstances.
Carolyn was over helping Cathy one day and they got into a very deep conversation about what is truly important in life. There were some issues that Cathy was struggling with so Carolyn’s words struck a chord. The conversation started with importance about living in the moment (this in itself is excellent advice for someone who has had recurrent breast cancer); of trusting that things will work out; and not hoarding our possessions or money for the future as we never know what the future will bring. The idea of forgiving herself for past decisions and choices was great advice on a rainy day. It was also a reminder to live in appreciation of what we do have and the moment we are in.
I know for Cathy receiving this timely advice also gave her an opportunity to think about what is important and what she needs to do to be the best person she can be in each moment. Has she made mistakes – of course, we all have! None of us is perfect but if we are willing to acknowledge our mistakes and learn from them then the opportunity to take risks going forward helps create the path for our ongoing success.
Diane's Rule: Being open to asking for advice or just listening to someone else’s story can be a life changing event.
The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice we give to others.
Ask for advice in the most unlikely of places and be willing to learn from the experience!
