Appreciation Quest - Cathy's Story

2011 Quest: The Year of Doing Right, Not Being Right

My sister who is on this quest with me told me an interesting story about appreciation and friendship that I thought might warm you up on a cold February day.

Cathy (my sister) has been through a lot in 2010.  She had a recurrence of breast cancer and had to have two surgeries, including a mastectomy.  Then much to her doctors surprise they did have to do chemotherapy and long term drug therapy. Her chemo started in the middle of June which is not the easiest time to have the support you need while going to your appointments.  However, her friends Laurie and Sandi made these 2 hour appointments “girlfriend time” and even when it wasn’t convenient they somehow made it work so that Cathy had their support.

Cathy and her friends have a standing Friday coffee date and she wanted to start 2011 off right by letting her friends know how much she appreciated them.  So, she let them know that she appreciated so much the support, love and prayers that they had given to her in what had been one of her most challenging years. She told me she got teary eyed thanking them.

The story could end there but it doesn’t.  One of her friends then said to her, “Cathy, don’t you get how easy it is to be your friend and just love you”?  Friends are there through both the trials and the triumphs.

Everyone left coffee that day feeling appreciated and I can tell from the way my sister talks that her friendships have moved to an even deeper level.

Appreciation Quote of the Week:

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn life around"Leo Buscaglia

This Week's Challenge:

Try each day this week to find someone that you can express appreciation to or genuinely thank. The secret is to do this with no expectation of return. See how it makes the other person feel and how it makes you feel to! Have fun with this and let me know how it goes.
